Kiril Belezhkov, Kaval PHD in musicology from the Plovdiv Academy of Music and Dance, teaches kaval and dance music at the same

 

 

kaval and ensemble music. A virtuoso of the instrument, he has led numerous workshops in France, Great Britain and Bulgaria.

 

 

 

Gaël Augustin began playing the trumpet at the Brest Conservatoire, before moving on to contemporary and improvised music.

 

 

After a few years bragging while studying architecture, various encounters enabled him to broaden his repertoire with trips to the Balkans: Zahir Ramadanov, trumpeter with Esma Redzepova, intensive coaching courses with masters of Macedonian Roma music and exchanges with various ensembles: Ziveli Orkestar, Collectif Volkanik, Haïdouti Orkestar, Merak Balkan Block Party or Pas d'Nom Pas d'Maison.

 

 

 

Joaquim Dewelle, Tuba, bass tuba (sousa) followed a classical music path and has always been interested in oral music and modal improvisation. He studied improvisation with Ibrahim Maalouf, then played with Ziveli Orkestar and other Balkan brass bands, and took part in numerous workshops with Pantelis Stoikos and Marko Markovic. A member of the Volkanik collective, Zarli Abdul teaches tuba at the Lorient and Vannes conservatories.

 

 

 

Guillaume Klaval, clarinettist and saxophonist, also plays the kaval and ney. Trained in Bulgaria, Turkey, Macedonia and Greece. In 2018, he moved to Athens to study traditional Greek music and joined the Athens Intercultural Orchestra. He created and directs the Balkan Session of Athens (group lessons and Balkan music orchestra/choir). Currently in Paris at the Conservatoire des Musiques Orientales et Méditerranéennes, he teaches and performs with various Greek, Turkish and Balkan music groups.

 

 

 

Pol Small percussionist: tapan and derbouka. Specializes in the gypsy repertoire of Bulgaria and Macedonia, in both traditional and more recent styles (kuchek, tallava...).

 

 

 

 

 

PROGRAM

 

 

The workshop is aimed at instrumentalists wishing to discover or deepen their knowledge of the Balkan music repertoire, focusing on Greece, Macedonia and Bulgaria. Transmission will be based on oral tradition.

 

 

 

Daytime 5h instruments + 2h ensemble music

 

 

 

Fanfare, workshops by instrument: Trumpets, clarinet-saxophone, tuba, percussion.

 

 

Depending on the workshop, learning of melodies, harmonic grids and specific rhythms.

 

 

Improvisation and the exploration of ornaments and modes are an integral part of these workshops. Dance, voice and percussion will also be part of the learning process...

 

 

 

KAVAL: The kaval workshop is open to flutes and neys. Kavals are available on loan.

 

 

 

Ensemble music

 

 

- Fanfare and percussion" ensemble workshop.

 

 

- A "kaval" ensemble workshop that will join the "Fanfare and percussion" workshop on the common repertoire.

 

 

 

Workshop on modes/makam and characteristics of Balkan music

 

 

 

Evening dance and jam each evening from 9pm to 11pm

 

 

Many fanfare tunes are derived from dance repertoires... There are no specific classes for dancers. On the other hand, during the evenings, Bénédicte Jucquois will offer an introduction to the dances for instrumentalists who so wish, accompanied by the musicians, enabling them to integrate dance music into their bodies, or to listen to the music of the steps they perform. A few hours' introduction to modal music and an exploration of the modes usually found in this type of music will be offered by Guillaume Klaval for musicians who wish to do so.

 

 

Ball open to the public under the big top on July 29 at 9 p.m.

 

 

 

LEVEL

 

 

Level: musicians with a minimum of technique and autonomy on their instruments.
